Computer Surveillance Systems
Computer surveillance systems are an affordable and effective way to keep your home or outdoor property safe. While not everyone is going to be able to invest in an expensive closed circuit security camera or alarm systems, a computer surveillance system is much cheaper and still provides the wireless video surveillance you desire that will ensure the safety of you, family members, and important belongings. Here are some tips to setting up a computer surveillance system that will remain within your budget.
Video Surveillance
There are hundreds of different video surveillance systems on the market that are available for your computer. These digital surveillance systems are a useful tool for anything from watching pets at home to preventing or capturing burglaries on camera. The only requirements for installing computer surveillance systems is a working computer, software for surveillance systems and either a webcam or an IP camera.
The software for computer surveillance systems is what allows motion and sound to be detected. By configuring the options on the computer as part of global surveillance systems you can tell the computer surveillance system to send alerts automatically to you whenever movement or noise is detected. Most programs will notify you through an email that will be sent with a snapshot taken by the camera of the computer surveillance system. You may also choose to have messages sent to a cell phone to alert you about what the computer surveillance system has picked up as a movement or a sound.
Many types of software for security systems let users record a video file of the activity that they can have sent to their computer systems as well. However, nearly all have the same basic option of monitoring on a live surveillance feed, allowing you to watch things as they are happening. This can be done from any computer as long as you have access to both a standard internet connection and a typical web browser.
Another option is having a video file periodically sent to you. This is typically referred to as interval alert activation. This means that you can choose what time you want the camera to start recording footage. This is useful when movement such as from people is something that occurs regularly in the area as it would set the alarm off if motion activated the alert system. Instead, you can set the alarm to start recording at a day time of day or at night when people are not around.
You may also select delaying motion or sound detection for a set amount of time. This will give you the chance to exit the area that is being monitored by the security camera or will allow you the opportunity to enter it for a certain part of the day without triggering the alarm. This is useful if you normally are in the monitored area, such as if it is in your backyard or the home office with your safe nearby. You can also have photos sent to you at picked time intervals as well. All of this is easy to do by specifying when you want to have the recordings or snapshots sent in hours, minutes and seconds.
When hooking up a webcam to your computer, make sure that it is placed in a way that it can view the areas you want it to, such as where the most valuable items or possessions you own are located. Panoramic options are available for those who are using systems to watch their children or pets. These are useful features of systems because they allow a much larger field of vision when they are placed at far above the ground and provide more certainty your loved ones are safe from harm.
Once you have the setup completed for the camera then you can move on to installing the software to fit your specific needs, such as how you are alerted. In order to ensure that the detection of movement from the security systems is accurate, you should choose the highest available sensitivity so that there will not be such a frequent amount of false readings and lead you to worry you for no reason. If you change the settings to high sensitivity then you will only be sent an alarm in the form you selected, and only when there is actually true motion recorded.
It is also important to lower the sensitivity of the camera's sound detection. This will reduce the number of false alarms too since you will only be notified when a loud noise that is unnatural to the environment is picked up by the security systems. If the sensitivity is too high then you will most likely be alarmed by normal sounds such as passing cars, household appliances and ventilation systems, or even birds singing if you have the computer surveillance systems installed outdoors.
