Another popular home security system takes the form of a DVR box. The only difference between a regular DVR and that designed for home security is the hard drive inside of the device. These systems are commonly used by those who want hidden surveillance for their home because they are easy to keep out of sight thanks to the unique features. For example, DVR systems can monitor a home with wireless cameras that are mountable to high walls and ceilings where they are difficult to spot. You can also watch different channels with the DVR home security system so that they camera will record footage or produce a live feed without needing to appear on the television screen at all times.

The DVR systems are also very efficient because of the hard drive's settings. Playback is an option available on most of the systems, making the recordings much higher in quality by playing the footage in real time instead of in frames that make it difficult to see what is going on. Real time recording is not found on many other systems available for personal use and is often cited by owners as the reason they bought and kept the DVR security systems. The reason many devices do not offer the feature of playback is the fact that the space that it takes up on hard drives is simply too large and will begin to affect the performance of the system.

However, to make real time recording possible, the DVR systems loop by automatically removing old recorded video to make room for new footage. This is an important feature because it means that your possessions and property will be monitored at all times without any need to delete recordings by yourself in order to make space. There are also ways to save recordings that contain criminal activity so they will not be removed from the drive once the activity is spotted. Turning off the real time option is the easiest way to do this, but you can also take other steps to saving space on the drive to reduce the chance of losing footage that could be useful in a legal case.

For example, you can change the settings on the DVR device so that it will only record at times of day when you aren't in the area. This saves a ton of space on the hard drive. You can also choose to have the cameras only activate when motion or sound is detected by the home security systems.
