Outdoor Security Camera Systems

Outdoor security camera systems can be purchased to protect your home or business locations. These systems are ideal for schools, parks, and other public spaces, but they also may a great, affordable home security option. Advanced outdoor security camera systems can be handled remotely, which means you can watch over your home even while you're on the road.

If you're interested in outdoor security camera systems, you'll have to spend some time researching your options. Do you want an IP based system? What kind of camera are you interested in? If you're not interested in reading about these matters, you can consult a security specialist. Of course, even with the help of an outdoor security camera systems expert, it's a good idea to do some of your own research too.

Outdoor Security Priorities

First off, deciding what type of camera (or cameras) to buy will require careful consideration on your part. Cameras come in all shapes, sizes, and prices. Cameras vary greatly in quality, too. Some cameras offer a very clear picture, whereas others convey only a fuzzy version of the situation.

Before you begin researching cameras that would work in outdoor security alarm systems, you'll need to think about your priorities. Obviously, you want to look at cameras that can survive in an outdoor setting. And, of course, you're hoping that the cameras will provide some kind of security. That being said, you have a number of other concerns to think about.

For example, do you think that the cameras could be easily vandalized? If you are securing a high-traffic area, you probably need to take this possibility into consideration. If the security systems are visible, people are more likely to break or tamper with the cameras. You can choose to install systems that are less visible, or you can choose cameras that are quite hardy if you're in a busy area.

You'll want to consider what, exactly, why you want outdoor surveillance. Do you need to be able to see the faces of the people on the screen? If you're just interested in a fancy motion detector, you can purchase low-quality cameras. However, if you actually want to be able to identify the faces, you'll need a more advanced set up.

You may or may not need to have cameras with night vision, for example. You may absolutely want a camera with a speaker that can talk. Or, perhaps you want to turn off the light from afar. Maybe you need to pan, tilt and zoom, to watch your dog cross the yard. Whatever your objectives are, you should figure them out before you check out the specifics of outdoor security camera systems.

Selecting an Outdoor Camera

There are several different kinds of outdoor cameras, and, among these choices, a number of decision you'll have to make. First off, there are basically three different types of outdoor cameras: dome, bullet and C-mount. Dome cameras look like a little dome or light. In fact, they don't really look like cameras. So, if you're interested in outdoor security camera systems that are more subtle, you might want to consider domes.

Dome cameras also offer a number of advantages over other cameras. They are very durable, and can even withstand a certain amount of abuse. Also, even if someone does recognize that a dome is a camera, he or she won't be able to tell where it's pointing. So, dome cameras offer extra security by being subtle.

Bullet cameras are encased in a "bullet" of protection. These cameras are able to survive severe weather conditions, which make them a good option for certain outdoor security camera systems. Bullet cameras won't experience damage if particles or stones or anything hits them. They are very strong.

The final type of camera used in outside surveillance systems is called a C-Mount. C-Mount cameras aren't as strong as dome or bullet cameras, and they'll need to be specially housed in order to function outside. Also, C-Mount cameras don't have night vision, so they won't work at night.

When you're considering various options, you'll also want to think about whether you want a full or partial IP system. Surveillance systems that rely partially on analog can be a bit of a hassle, but full IP systems may be somewhat more expensive. Also, you need to figure out whether you have a strong enough network, and an appropriate amount of bandwidth.

Outdoor security camera systems are relatively complicated. Along with different types of cameras, you need to consider the bandwidth, the resolution, the software, the advanced features and even the way the system is powered. A surveillance system that works through PoE (power over Ethernet) can save you a significant amount energy and money, but some cameras may not be eligible for it.
